Teeth Clenching

Teeth clenching is a problem that occurs when a person tightens or grinds their teeth, usually without being aware of it. Although it most commonly occurs during sleep, it can also appear during the day in moments of stress or intense concentration. If not treated in time, it can lead to serious problems affecting both the teeth and the jaw joint.

Among the most well-known causes of teeth clenching are stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders. In addition, improper bite alignment, misaligned teeth, and certain neurological factors can also contribute to this condition. In children, it may appear temporarily during the period when baby teeth fall out or when new teeth are erupting.

Symptoms of bruxism include jaw pain in the morning, headaches, tooth wear, enamel cracks, and gum problems. Long-term teeth clenching can cause clicking sounds in the jaw joint and difficulty opening the mouth. It may also lead to shortened teeth and an irregular appearance, creating aesthetic concerns.

Treatment methods are determined according to the underlying cause. The most common solution is the use of a night guard. This transparent appliance prevents direct contact between the teeth and helps reduce wear. In stress-related cases, relaxation exercises, stress management, and in some situations psychological support can be beneficial.

To prevent teeth clenching, certain changes in daily habits can also be helpful. Avoiding chewing gum, resting the jaw, reducing caffeine intake, and maintaining a regular sleep routine are particularly beneficial. Being consciously aware of whether the jaw is clenched during the day and actively relaxing it is also important.

Untreated bruxism can eventually lead to tooth loss and temporomandibular joint disorders. For this reason, early diagnosis and intervention are critical for long-term dental and jaw joint health. Regular dental check-ups help detect this problem at an early stage.

In conclusion, teeth clenching is a common but often unnoticed problem. With appropriate treatment methods and lifestyle changes, it can be brought under control and dental health can be preserved.
